“In the poetics of Relation, one who is errant (who is no longer traveler, discoverer, or conqueror) strives to know the totality of the world yet already knows he will never accomplish this-and knows that is precisely where the threatened beauty of the world resides” .
—Édouard Glissant, Poetics of Relation, 1990

Open Circle, Lived Relation proposes ways of thinking and handling uncertainty inside and outside the body of the image.

Uncertainty is viewed here as an unparalleled force for speculation, imagination, and mysticism. Encompassing the anomaly, doubt and the sense of an incoherent world; taming a photographic document frantic and ambiguous at heart, wherein relationships between object and subject, reality and representation, truth and fiction are nebulous; exploring the potential of the image as a tool for an alternative reading of the past, the present and the future; unlearning, decentralising, de-formatting, experimenting, de-territorialising and de-authorising dogmas and hierarchies.

One approach, one thousand landscapes. An assemblage of over thirty books is employed here to wander from the peripheries towards the centre or a non-centre. Navigating uncharted waters, rethinking the world, establishing instead of axioms the possibility of new connections. Drift; fluctuation; suspension. Rehearsing connections that derive not so much from the apparent themes and subjects of things but from their existential course. Assuming that uncertainty, speculation and chance form an inherent part of the poetics of relation wherein all identity unfolds in a relationship with the Other.

Deprived of a specific centre, voice and rhizome, the exhibition provides an open space for (re)readings, situations and appropriations.  It is accompanied by a workshop which will employ as its starting point Poetics of Relation (1990) by Martinican poet-philosopher Édouard Glissant, and other formulations on the role of speculation in contemporary visual and archival practices, as to reinforce alternative cartographies of the ‘world map’ created by the featured books and by the reality in transformation we live in.
