Kiki Tianqi Yu

Kiki Tianqi Yu is a filmmaker and Lecturer in Film at Queen Mary University of London. Kiki works on documentary, essay film in non-western cinemas, cinema and Chinese philosophies, women’s cinema and independent film culture. As a filmmaker, her films include Photographing Shenzhen (2006), Memory of Home (2009), China’s van Goghs (co-directed with Haibo Yu, 2016), and The Two Lives of Li Ermao (2019). Her films have been shown at over 40 international film festivals, including IDFA, Vision Du Reel, Helsinki Documentary Film Festival DocPoint, Thessaloniki Film Festival, UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, Beijing International Film Festival, New Zealand International Film Festival, etc and won 8 awards. Kiki’s books include ‘My’ Self on Camera: First Person Documentary Practice in an Individualising China (2019) China’s iGeneration: Cinema and Moving Image Culture for 21st Century (2014), ‘Feminist approaches in women’s first person documentaries from East Asia’ a special issue of Studies in Documentary Film (with Alisa Lebow, 2020).
