Suzanne Moxhay creates work that blurs the boundaries between photography and painting. Combining the literalism of photography with the more ineffable qualities of painting, his mysterious digital prints create atmospheric spaces that are at once utterly familiar and strange.
The obviously photographic origins of his works suggest real space, but then we get lost in painted areas that flatten perspective and force us to hover between two and three dimensions. As we explore Moxhay’s silent rooms, we are constantly surprised: shadows fall in the wrong direction, photographs of real moths fly in the air evoked by the painting, and what at first seems expansive suddenly becomes shallow.
English artist currently resident in London. His work revolves around narrative photography where he assembles dioramas to take a photograph of the scene he made, thus establishing a direct connection between the narrative and the viewer.
